What is Spelt?
Spelt was the first grain we started importing from Europe; since then, it has gained great popularity, being considered a nutritional superfood! While it contains gluten, the gluten structure is more fragile and water-soluble, making spelt easier to digest for people with wheat sensitivities.Spelt has a nutty flavour and excellent baking properties, making it a versatile and wholesome alternative to wheat in many recipes.
Spelt bran is a valuable byproduct of spelt processing and is used in compounded feeds for various livestock due to its high fiber and nutrient content.
It can be incorporated into the diets of many animals, including:
- Ruminants (cattle, sheep, goats). It has good digestibility in ruminants and helps prevent conditions like acidosis when included in high-forage diets in appropriate amounts.
- Pigs/Swine, including weaner pigs and pregnant sows. It can be used as a source of fiber to aid digestion and gut health, and as an energy diluent during gestation to manage hunger.
- Poultry (chickens, layers). It can partially replace other energy sources like maize in their diets.
- Horses. It is palatable and can be used in moderation as a fiber source.
- Rabbits. It is a valuable source of energy, digestible fiber, and protein and is frequently used in commercial feeds.
